My Hobbies

A couple years ago Matt asked me why I liked to make things. I told him I enjoyed doing it and it gave me a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. I really couldn't go into more detail about why...I just do! When I heard this talk by President Uchtdorf (October 2008) I thought "that's why I like to make things!" It's so much more than accomplishment. He explains why women have a desire to create in an absolute and beautiful way--A way I could never have explained to Matt. Pres. Uchtdorf isn't just talking about crafts and scrapbooking. Here is a small bit of his talk that I REALLY really love.

"The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul. No matter our talents, education, backgrounds, or abilities, we each have an inherent wish to create something that did not exist before.
Everyone can create. You don’t need money, position, or influence in order to create something of substance or beauty.
Creation brings deep satisfaction and fulfillment. We develop ourselves and others when we take unorganized matter into our hands and mold it into something of beauty—and I am not talking about the process of cleaning the rooms of your teenage children.
You might say, “I’m not the creative type. When I sing, I’m always half a tone above or below the note. I cannot draw a line without a ruler. And the only practical use for my homemade bread is as a paperweight or as a doorstop.”
If that is how you feel, think again, and remember that you are spirit daughters of the most creative Being in the universe. Isn’t it remarkable to think that your very spirits are fashioned by an endlessly creative and eternally compassionate God? Think about it—your spirit body is a masterpiece, created with a beauty, function, and capacity beyond imagination.
But to what end were we created? We were created with the express purpose and potential of experiencing a fulness of joy.4 Our birthright—and the purpose of our great voyage on this earth—is to seek and experience eternal happiness. One of the ways we find this is by creating things.
If you are a mother, you participate with God in His work of creation—not only by providing physical bodies for your children but also by teaching and nurturing them. If you are not a mother now, the creative talents you develop will prepare you for that day, in this life or the next.
You may think you don’t have talents, but that is a false assumption, for we all have talents and gifts, every one of us.5 The bounds of creativity extend far beyond the limits of a canvas or a sheet of paper and do not require a brush, a pen, or the keys of a piano. Creation means bringing into existence something that did not exist before—colorful gardens, harmonious homes, family memories, flowing laughter.
What you create doesn’t have to be perfect. So what if the eggs are greasy or the toast is burned? Don’t let fear of failure discourage you. Don’t let the voice of critics paralyze you—whether that voice comes from the outside or the inside.
If you still feel incapable of creating, start small. Try to see how many smiles you can create, write a letter of appreciation, learn a new skill, identify a space and beautify it."

On that note, I wanted to post about some of my latest hobbies. Although they are far from perfect and have many flaws I still feel that sense of satisfaction from creating something. First, I started digital scrapbooking months ago when some friends in the ward told me about it. I never cared for paper scrapbooking because of how long it took to complete one page, not being able to cut perfectly, the mess, and so on. Digital scrapbooking can be fast, easy, and look really cute. (and you don't have to cut anything straight!). So here are a few of my favorite pages....

AND my most recent project that I just finished today, is a library bag for Tommy. I was tired of almost dropping his books on the way to the car every week! There were lots of mistakes but it should serve the purpose!

Birthday Fun!

On Monday Matt left to Mississippi for work. Tommy and I did our usual; grocery shopping, storytime, and just playing. On Wednesday Tommy broke out into a rash. It was faint in the morning, and then grew more red and all over his body by the afternoon. I took him to the doctor. Matt met us there, coming straight from the airport. He tested for Strep. but it was negative, although he did have a slight sore throat so the doctor thought it was just a viral rash. Tommy didn't itch it and he wasn't really fussy so we just had to wait it out. Since it was contagious we stayed home the rest of Wednesday and Thursday. You can't really see it from the pictures but it really did look bad.

I had a really great birthday on Friday. The age of 27 is sure getting up there...to me;)
Anyway, it was a lot of fun. I received many birthday wishes through text, facebook (love facebook:), and phone calls. Sorry I didn't get back to all of them. Tommy and I were not staying home! I was ready to get out. We first headed to the Donut shop on the corner. He had a sausage biscuit and pretty much ate the entire thing! He washed it down with some chocolate milk-yum! I splurged and had an eclair...so good!
Then we headed to the mall. I received birthday money from Mimi and Papa, and was so excited to shop! Tommy was awesome in the mall! He let me look at a bunch of stores while sitting in the stroller. I let him out to play with this simulator. They have them in most malls. I'm not sure what it's called but Tommy loved it! Anything he stomped on would move, so he became really good at stomping!
I didn't find anything at the mall so we headed to Hancocks and Joann's. Tommy fell asleep at Joanns which was perfect! I was able to look at some fabric AND get it cut (there was a long line to get it cut too) before he woke up and wanted lunch! So great!
Then we headed to Chick-Fil-A and Tommy ate all his chicken nuggets. We stopped at one more store and then headed home.
Tommy didn't take much of a nap but was still pretty content. Matt came home and surprised me with some Godiva chocolates and my wedding rings he had cleaned. Then he made Chicken Alfredo with garlic bread and it turned out great. Then I had a delivery from Edible Arrangements that night. My mom sent me chocolate covered strawberries! Talk about a chocolate overload, but I LOVED it! They were delicious! They also came with this balloon and Tommy got a kick out of it!
Once Tommy went to bed I got cheesecake (my favorite) and a relaxing bath (another favorite)! All in all a really great day. Matt made a great effort to make it special and I really appreciate all he does! I was definitely spoiled by my boys! Saturday I went to work, and shortly after coming home we went to another mall, in hopes of finding some clothes! Crazy to go on tax-free weekend but I did find some cute stuff! Matt was really sweet in not rushing me and making sure I had time to find what I liked. He even picked out some things for me to try on!
Autrey, Shilo and Dylan came with us and that was fun.
Tommy was definitely done with shopping after 2 days of it!
I also get to just digital scrapbook one night this week. Yay!
Last night (Saturday) Tommy was awake with congestion and a small cough. He has been sneezing with a runny nose all day. He keeps waking up from his naps because of the congestion. I guess this is the the brunt of the sickness. Poor little guy. Hopefully it passes quickly.

Pics from earlier this week-Tommy ready for school!

Tommy pretending!
I drew these grapes and pretended to eat them. He soon caught on!

For a couple weeks now, Tommy will draw circles and then point to it and say 'circle!' I was really proud when he did this for the first time!

Also, when Tommy misses with the golf club, he'll say 'miss!" and when he bumps a car into something he'll say 'crash!' Really really cute!

Born To Be Wild

Tommy and I were at home Friday when the doorbell rang. When I opened the door Tommy saw a box with a bicycle on it. I wish I could have captured his face. He was sooo excited! We just sold our treadmill and decided to buy him a tricycle. Everytime he sees one he has to point and say 'bicycle' a hundred times. After much searching and deliberation we decided on a tricycle, rather than a ridiculously expensive Power Wheels (even on Craigs List). But it was Matt's idea to get the Schwinn Roadster Tricycle! It's huge! Matt wanted it to have REAL tires. Nothing but the best for him! Anyway, we knew he would get a lot of use out of it.

Helping me put it together.
Testing it out. He can reach the pedals pretty well with his shoes on but is still trying to figure out HOW to pedal.
On a real ride outside!
It also has an awesome bell!

Earlier this week I got out my guitar. Tommy was so fascinated with it. He liked playing with our little Ukelele so I knew he'd love this.

Using the pick
What Tommy loves to do right now:
*say 'again' when you do something he likes
*say 'mama? mama? mama?' when I leave the room
*draw with pens (crayons for a short time, but pens he loves)
*just started drawing a picture and then saying what he drew; has said, 'a ball' or 'a hat'
*when we say 'we will, we will, Rock you' then he says "Rock you!'
*also sings 'na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye' (by Steam on Remember the Titans)
*throw things in the garbage (not always a good thing)
*helps me cook and whenever I have a measuring spoon or cup he yells, "on! on!" because he wants to pour it into the bowl
*will watch Curious George for a few minutes at a time, and baseball. He talks about the bat and the ball during the game
*he's also starting to transition to one nap

Michelle and Austin!

We went to Austin last-minute to see my step-sister Michelle. She was down for a friend's birthday and was done with those festivities Saturday. We got there around 4 and stayed at a Hilton because Matt had free night from all of his work travel. yay! The first thing Tommy had to do was enjoy the view.
Next, enjoy the cool pillows
Third, sightsee.
We walked to the Capital. It wasn't that far, but it was pretty hot. They are currently working on it.
This was  an actual well.
In the middle of the Capital-Tommy checking out the dome.
I thought the elevator doors looked really neat.
Tommy had to climb the stairs
We ate at a pretty good place downtown. I just had chicken fingers and shared with Tommy, but his burger was really good. We sat outside, and there was, of course, music. It was close to 6th street after all. Tommy liked the guitarist. He even played the itsy bitsy spider.
Then we had to go swimming to cool off. Matt would throw Tommy in the air and catch him. He loved it!
Sunday afternoon Tommy finally got to meet his Aunt! She was so excited to see him! At first when he tried to say her name, it sounded like 'cereal.' But by the end of the visit, when she left to the airport, he started whining saying, 'shell!' 'shell!' It was really cute.
Michelle first wanted to go to Mellow Johnny's bike shop. It is owned by Lance Armstrong and she's a big fan. It was pretty ridiculous how much that stuff costs! This bike caught Tommy's eye.
Michelle was his little backseat buddy. She was really impressed he could move the ball on her Blackberry. Thankfully he didn't break it!
On our way back from lunch, Tommy had to chase a bird. Michelle was snapping lots of pics with her cool camera!
Family Pic with me and Tommy's hair looking like cockatoos!
Then Michelle had looked up Jim Jim's Ice Water. It was long hot walk, but ended up being worth it-a fantastic snowcone! Tommy had my strawberry-kiwi flavor. His lips looked a lot redder in person.
We found a little spot by the river to pull over and take a picture of all of us. Can you tell it was windy? Poor Michelle had to set her camera on a tree branch and run to us, just in time for the picture. This was the best it was going to get!
Throwing a few rocks in the river
Camera training session.
We haven't seen Michelle in over 5 years so it was really, really good to see her! I'm so glad we went!

Utah! July 27th - August 3rd

We had a really great time in Utah. It's taken me awhile to blog because it's started to feel like chore now. I hate that, but I know my few readers enjoy seeing Tommy so I will stick with it!

Tommy did ok on the plane ride. He didn't sleep and was cranky for a bit, but all in all he did fine. We met grandma at the airport and she loved seeing him pull his new rolling bear backpack! Then we headed to Alex' house where Tommy's interest in all-things-sports expanded to...mitts! Tommy LOVES Alex. He would follow him around like a mini-me!

They have an awesome aquarium that Tommy loved.

The boys played ball outside, despite the heat. Tommy was in heaven when we put him on this...
Later we went to Wendy's where McKayla works and cooled down with a frosty! She couldn't talk but thought Tommy was so cute walking. (She hasn't seen him since Thanksgiving) Then we took Alex to his soccer practice and Tommy loved running around on the grass. There were airplanes constantly flying by so that intrigued him too! Alisha came and we went to Kneader's Cafe for dinner. I really miss that place! Yum Yum!
When it was time to get into our car, Tommy threw a fit wanting to drive, so the softy-Aunt Alisha gave in for a few minutes! ;)
On Wednesday morning, Tommy and Matt played at a park while my mom and I played tennis. It was so much fun and I wish I could play more often!
Then Alex came and we went to Hollywood Connections to ride the carousel (a big hit) and play some games!
Of course he liked the driving game, until the seat started moving back/forth and up/down. Then he started to freak out.
Alex was awesome at the ski ball and won Tommy this slinky!
What a great cousin!
(notice his morning hair;)
Wednesday night, Matt, Alisha, and I went to see "The Wedding Singer" musical at the Hale Center Theatre. My mom and Roy had seen it and loved it so she was nice enough to buy us tickets. I'm really the only one into musicals so I thought it was awesome and funny, but I did hear Matt and Alisha laughing too!
On Thursday we went to the Children's Museum. It was packed! Tommy still had a good time and Alex was his little buddy at each place
Again with the driving...
A little tree house with Tommy-sized furniture
Grocery shopping!
We went to Winger's for dinner. Again-I miss that place! Alex had never been and of course now he's a fan.
Alex trying to checkout the menu
Big Horsey!
I thought Tommy would love this helicopter but it made some pretty loud sounds and he didn't last long.
Alex went right to work with Tommy's name when he found these lettered mats. They are great buddies!
Thursday night we met up with some old friends. Poor Matt was the only husband who came but I'm glad he did. He played with Tommy while I was able to catch up on how everyone's doing. It was so much fun to chat!
On Friday we met Alisha, Alex, and Travis for lunch at the Olive Garden. Then Travis had a tee-time to get to and we went to the mall. We were heading to an indoor mini golf course but Tommy fell asleep in the car and he really needed a good nap. So we drove further to SouthTowne Mall. Tommy HAD to have this once he saw it and of course, grandma couldn't say no!
They also had a carousel-checking out the ceiling!
On Saturday, my mom, Matt, Alex, and Travis played golf. Alisha came over and we played outside. We put on a little sprinkler and he liked jumping over it. It started to rain these huge rain drops and Tommy didn't mind them.
Saturday was our 7th wedding anniversary. I can't believe it's been that long! Thanks to grandma-the babysitter we were able to go to the Salt Lake Temple and then eat at the Roof Restaurant. A buffett of desserts is all I could ask for!
Sunday we went to church and then had a big family get-together to visit and write letters to my cousins, the 2 missionaries in our family, Tim Lesuma and Gavin Fahey. We also wrote letters to a soldier in the military. My mom is involved in the adopt-a-soldier program at work and he has really appreciated the packages she has sent.
Hanging out with Aunt Alisha!
Lounging!
Finally we were able to see McKayla!
Notice the roses from Matt ;)
Showing the family his skills
He can't get any more attention than that!
On Monday, Matt scheduled me a manicure and pedicure (for our anniversary) at Gardner's Village. Grandpa had to work this week but hung out with us all day Monday. They had a pony ride here and Tommy loved it! He wasn't scared a bit! We then went to Leatherby's, really great icecream!(I love icecream and really really miss this place!)
Tommy's car buddy-kept him laughing and singing!
Monday night we had one last visit. Unfortunately this was the best picture we got!
After Tommy's bath he was all packed up!
We really did have a great time. Thanks grandma and grandpa for having us, and we can't wait to come for Christmas!
